A few kilometres from Macerata, a province of the Marche Region, we find Recanati, located in a very panoramic position between the Musone and Potenza river valleys. Extended on a high and winding hill 296 metres above sea level, it has an area of 102 square kilometres and a population of about 21,400 inhabitants. The city can be reached from the 'Raffaello Sanzio' Airport in Falconara (Ancona), the A14 - Loreto/Porto Recanati motorway exit and the Loreto and Ancona railway stations.
It is the imposing aristocratic villa named after the Friulian family of landowners who settled in the Marche region in the 17th century. It has been home to the Civic Museums since 1998. Sixteenth-century staircases and eighteenth-century paintings enrich the structure, which houses absolute masterpieces: four of the most beautiful works by Renaissance master Lorenzo Lotto (including the famous Annunciation), a section entirely dedicated to Giacomo Leopardi and the Golden Bull of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Villa Colloredo Mels also hosts the evocative Museo dell'Emigrazione Marchigiana (MEMA), a multimedia and interactive museum dedicated to the many Marche people who abandoned their homeland in search of fortune between the late 19th and early 20th century. The Civic Art Gallery, the archaeological section, and the historical and modern sections complete the visit.
In the heart of the city of Recanati is Piazza Giacomo Leopardi, at the centre of which stands the statue dedicated to the poet, who is remembered with an absorbed and pensive gaze. Next to it is the Torre del Borgo, mentioned in some verses of Le Ricordanze, inside which is the Museum dedicated to the city of Recanati (MUREC). From the top of the tower it is possible to admire one of the most beautiful views of the entire Marche region, ranging from the Sibillini Mountains to Monte Conero. Inside the Persiani Theatre, built at the behest of Monaldo Leopardi, more precisely in the Sala dei Trenta, is the Beniamino Gigli Museum, a small jewel dedicated to the great tenor from Recanati, who became famous all over the world: among the unforgettable songs written for him, we cannot fail to mention the very famous Mamma.
